I don't know what for was it implemented this way, my main concern is about better ergonomics. For instance, you can't bookmark pages easier, also drag-and-drop links. In other words, links become regular links with all their modern functionality behavior customization, etc. Not just buttons supporting only one action: direct mouse click.
